The Flames of Kindness

Organisational Symbolism at Mountbatten

Spring. In many religions the renewal and rebirth of this time of year is celebrated. When Wolfgang, Gary and Tia arrived this time at Mountbatten, CEO Nigel Hartley took us on a tour, to show Wolfgang around and to show Tia and Gary what was new. We began in the multi-faith chapel and the Flames of Kindness…

The Flames of Kindness, by Island artist Lisa Traxler

Lisa Traxler has created other works specifically for Mountbatten, such as their beautiful Memory Tree The Flames celebrates Mountbatten’s “45 years of kindness.” It was designed to be carried as the ‘torch’ in the staff relay – on the ferries between Mountbatten Isle of Wight and Mountbatten Hampshire as part of the celebration of the 45 years of hospice services on the island. There is a perspex frame next to the Flames that tells the story….

The mosaics along the walls of the Chapel are made from local glass – recycled from sherry and spirits bottles (we do not know who consumed all that cream sherry – was it Nigel?).

And then just content…

End of Day One

An account of the Festival is on the Care for Music Website and you can find it here. Tia is looking forward to her next visit and in particular to beginning to speak in interview with some of the many people who contribute to this special place that is Mountbatten and people who have been touched by it. The Care for Music Team continues to explore Wolfgang’s work in Bergen. Meanwhile, we celebrate the Spring and the season of new growth…
